Call for Volunteers: event on 3rd November

Driven by Community Waltham Forest’s new corporate strategy, Creating Futures, and the Integrated Communities funding from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), Connecting Communities represents a new way of thinking about the borough’s priorities, how they can be addressed, and the role everyone can play in:
Walthamstow Migrants’ Support Centre is a welcoming, non-judgmental place for all migrants living in Waltham Forest and beyond. It is a drop-in centre that runs on Friday mornings in the back room of the Salvation Army shop on Forest Road in Walthamstow from 10-12:30 (or 9am if we have early appointments).
We aim to help all visitors in any way that we can, regardless of their current legal status in the UK. We do not buy into the narrative that there are ‘good’ and ‘bad’, ‘deserving’ or ‘undeserving’ migrants. We believe that no one is illegal and we try to act alongside those who visit our Centre to navigate the horrendous conditions created by the hostile environment espoused and perpetrated by the government. Currently we do this through
food bank referrals, providing access to our free advisors, providing a safe space to meet and chat with refreshments, and giving direction to specialist services.
We are a small centre, wholly run by volunteers, that sees an average of 10-15 visitors each week. In future, we want to be in a position to provide follow up case work and to establish better connections with groups supporting migrants across London. We are looking for people who want to help us achieve these aims and develop our capabilities.
We have a number of very rewarding roles that we are looking to fill where you can contribute to the running of the Centre and learn new skills. We understand the importance of working sustainably, which means we work closely as a team and support each other so that everyone’s tasks are manageable. Role descriptions can be found by clicking here.

Waltham Forest Adult Learning Service: 2 Vacancies to be delivered from September 2018
From Waltham Forest Council:
Waltham Forest has been named as the first Borough of Culture.
It is our ambition to have ‘culture on every corner’.
To support this we are extending our offer in arts and crafts to enable more residents to access these courses.
Equivalent hourly rate £21.30 – £29.73. Hours available range from 3 hours a week upwards, including evenings and weekends. Courses and workshops are delivered at a range of venues across the borough for the Borough of Culture 2019.
Waltham Forest Adult Learning Service is the local authority’s direct provider of adult education and work-based training. We are looking for part time lecturers in any discipline in the Arts but particularly in upholstery, jewellery-making and cake decorating.
The role will include delivery of non-accredited and accredited courses. You will need to be passionate about your subject and be able to raise achievement through motivating, challenging and inspiring our adult learners.
You must be experienced and a qualified teacher or be willing to complete an initial teaching qualification. WFALS will be willing to pay for your initial teaching qualification – a Level 3 Education & Training Award which will be delivered by the service.
If you have the expertise to help students develop their skills in any of these areas and you are committed to being an outstanding practitioner, focused on achieving the best outcomes for your students, then this is the role for you!

Closing Date is: Friday 29th June 2018
Interviews to be held on: Monday 16th July 2018
Conversation Clubs are run in a variety of local public spaces: libraries, children’s centres, community centres, places of worship and schools. We have a number of vibrant clubs currently running throughout the borough, but new volunteers are needed to support existing clubs and set up new clubs. We offer a 5 week FREE City and Guilds accredited training course to support adults who have English as a second language to improve their speaking and listening skills and encourage conversation. There is also an ongoing support and development programme for volunteers who complete the training and contribute to the running of a club. There are still a few places left our next training course which begins on June 9th.
If you are interested in becoming an English Conversation Club volunteer, please don’t hesitate to contact us for further information on 020 8496 1130 or email us on conversationclub.als@walthamforest.gov.uk for more information

The government announced a new Green Paper on 14th March 2018 proposing measures to help all communities in the UK feel more integrated into British life. The paper specifically calls for new ways to “promote adoption of the English language across all communities in England, including a new community-based English language programme, a new network of conversation clubs, and support for local authorities to improve the provision of English language tuition for those who need it most” and promises £50 million over 2 years towards the integration strategies.
